I am a huge fan of Scarygoround ( www.scarygoround.com) and after meeting the creator at the weekend and generally getting more excited about drawing in general I thought "Why have I not drawn any art for myself of these characters?"
Moreover, scarygo round is having a guest comic contest so I want to be on top of that.
Dark Esther is my favourite character in the comic so I wanted to start with her. I stared at a blank sheet of paper and could honestly not think of a single thing to do with her at all! So i used a process!
brainstormed aspects of the character that sprang to mind and some vague concepts I could use to encaspulate some sketches. which resulted in this two pages of my sketchbook. the process worked so well I will have to use it again.
its all about becoming a better artist and drawing other peoples characters is a great way to challenge yourself. Also it highlights the importance of this kind of excersise becuase sometimes you just hit the nail on the head and produce a lovely image. The boxing sketch I LOVE and will develop into a final piece. The profile drawings I did just to work some stuff out in my head. simple is better. I draw simple from the front so its silly I always draw anatomically correct profile shots. Makes no sense.
I think that the reason dark esther is so popular in the comic is becuase she represents that goth girl a lot of people wish they had went out with in high school but didnt. Or its just becuase she taps into that same nerve that Neil Gaimans Death does (Why do you think I wear an ankh?)
Staggeringly little art on this character on DA so here is some for a start.
